So some of you just
want
to get out and buy some stuff! Most
of
the major shopping is to the south of town but there are plenty places
nearby
to pick up those last minute things you may have forgotten.
Big
Shopping
The Summit
– Outdoor mall that has 3 shopping areas.
There are shuttles that you can ride to get around
to all areas without
having to keep moving your car. This
is
the newest large shopping complex in the area and includes large
department
stores like Saks and Belk and many boutique shops, restaurants, etc. Near the Summit is also a
Whole Foods and
just down the road is a shopping center that includes World Market,
Best Buy
and Nordstrom Rack. The
Summit is
located down US280 and depending on the time of day 10-15 minutes from
the
hotel. Traffic is
heavy getting there in
the afternoons as many people that work in town live that direction. Recommended to go early
and come back against
the traffic in the afternoon.
The Galleria –
Located in Hoover off of I-65 and I-459, this is the
largest indoor shopping
mall in the area. Larger
stores include
Macy’s, Von Maur, Belk, Sears and JC Penney.
And of course, there are plenty of smaller shops,
restaurants and a food
court with great variety. There
are
smaller shopping centers all around that include Best Buy, Whole Foods,
PetSmart, Office Depot, Field & Stream, etc.
Typically 15 minutes from the hotel, traffic
down I-65 South is also heavy in the afternoons on weekdays. Plan similarly to shopping
off of US280.
Shops at Grand River –
Located at the same exit as the Barber Motorports
Museum and Raceway (listed
under sightseeing),
this is an outdoor outlet mall with plenty of shops to keep
you busy. There is
also a Bass Pro Shop
located at this exit. This
is at exit
140 off of I-20 East, about 15-20 minutes from the hotel.
Closer to the
hotel, smaller scale and necessities
Quirky fun downtown
shops and a local standard
– 2nd Avenue North between 20th
and 25th
Street has become a hot spot for restaurants and nightlight but also
includes a
couple of great shops. Levy’s was
founded in 1922 and is still operated by the same family. Certainly they have
beautiful modern pieces,
but their estate collection is amazing and worth perusing. Originally on the same street was What’s
On Second (they've now moved to 2323 1st Avenue North) where you can still find all
manner of pop culture collectibles plus some vintage items as well. And finally, you can’t
miss Reed Books on
3rd Avenue North.
Stop by on the way to or from the
others. Stacked to
the ceiling with
books, the proprietor knows what he has and where it is.
Brookwood Mall –
Need some last minute things for the banquet or the
weekend? Macy’s and Belk at
this mall should have you covered as well as other smaller shops. There is also a Target
across the parking
lot. Located just
off of I-31, less than
10 minutes from the hotel. Again,
traffic towards this mall will be heavier in the afternoon, but it is
fairly
close and an easy trip.
Colonial Promenade
in
Trussville – 10-15 minutes
from the hotel off of 1-59 North where I-459 North
ends. Belk, JC
Penney, Best Buy, Target,
Books a Million, Michaels, and even Home Depot.
Just down the street is the new Pinnacle
at Tutwiler that includes a Petco.
Eastwood Village
Shopping Center – another
outdoor shopping center
10 minutes from the hotel off of I-20 East.
Includes Walmart Supercenter, Ross, Tuesday Morning,
Office Depot. Not
far down the road (Montclair Road) is a
Publix and a Winn Dixie off of the parallel road, Montevallo Road. Also located nearby is an
ABC Store (liquor
store) at 7621 Crestwood Boulevard, Birmingham, AL
35210.
This location is open until 9 PM Monday through
Saturday. All ABC
Stores are closed on Sunday and
Public Holidays.
This area is likely
one of
the best for some one stop shopping for essentials.
Groceries within
walking distance – Publix
– 230 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35236.
Located less than a mile from the hotel, take a
leisurely stroll down 20th
Street through downtown and grab some necessities.
You can also take advantage of a Zyp
bike for the trip or even Shipt to
have them delivered.
Shipt was actually founded in Birmingham as a
grocery delivery service
and typically makes it purchases from Publix stores.
Liquor Stores
– Your best pricing is found at an ABC Store, or as we call them, a
state
store. They are
generally open Monday
through Saturday and closed on Sundays and Holidays.
Hours vary by location, but generally do not
open before 10 AM and the latest any one is open is 9:00 PM.
The 2 closest are –
2911 7th
Avenue
South, Birmingham, AL 35205
7621 Crestwood
Boulevard,
Birmingham, AL 35210
If you are going to
be out
and about, look for the big blue “ABC” letters.
